UN-Habitat helps the urban poor by transforming cities into safer, more inclusive, compact, integrated, resilient and connected places with better opportunities where everyone can live with dignity.
It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society, and the private sector to help build, manage, plan and finance sustainable urban development.
The Regional Office for Latin American and the Caribbean - ROLAC - is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Agency puts emphasis in developing and managing activities in the host country.
Indeed, for the past years, UN-Habitat has expanded its portfolio in Brazil by working with the three tiers of government to support the formulation and implementation of more effective, sustainable, participative, and socially fairer urban economic, social, and environmental policies.
To expand the programme and seek support to work with the challenges of reducing urban poverty and integrating all segments of the population into the fabric of the city, UN-Habitat is a partner of Instituto Pereira Passos (IPP) of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro (PCRJ) in the implementation of the Social Territories Programme.
To respect, protect and achieve rights and build a fairer and more equitable city, the Social Territories Programme aims to identify the most vulnerable urban population of the city of Rio de Janeiro, better understand their living conditions and promote specialized support to integrate them into public registries, the network of basic services and the municipal urban fabric.
The Social Territories Programme is being implemented, since 2019, in the following large favela complexes (Alemão, Chapadão, Cidade de Deus, Lins, Maré, Pedreira, Penha, Jacarezinho, Rocinha and Vila Kennedy) and is currently being expanded in larger scale throughout the city.
