The Managing Principal Engineer (MPE) for Ship and Statutory Department is a strategic position for the ABS Rio de Janeiro Engineering Department.

As ABS continues to expand its services and deliverables, this new leadership position is essential to strengthening client engagement, enhancing technical oversight, and streamlining departmental operations.The Managing Principal Engineer : Functions under the direction and oversight of a more senior Department Engineering Manager, in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards, and has full responsibility for directing and monitoring project work within a technical area of a larger engineering department.Leads in their area of specialization and assigns work according to priority.Acts as a technical resource and mentor to principal, senior and entry to mid-level engineers in area of responsibility.Is responsible for day-to-day activities, including the maintenance of the quality, content, consistency and continuity of all technical work performed in an assigned technical unit or area.What You Will Do : Responsible for the technical verification of tasks related to ship / statutory disciplines and training new engineers in these areas.Assists in the development of short- and long-range business plans and related annual operating and capital expense budgets.Maintains active awareness of business and management developments affecting present and potential customers.Maintains awareness of product and service capabilities of the business.

Identifies improvement and developmental needs, takes action to capitalize on prospective market opportunities and makes recommendations for technology or technical tools and manpower skills necessary to implement new and improved products and services.Ensures that assigned engineering positions are adequately staffed with qualified and competent engineering personnel capable of carrying out assigned technical projects in accordance with established policies, procedures and technical standards.Ensures that all ABS Quality System requirements are fulfilled with regard to project work within a technical unit or area.Monitors the delivery and quality of technical services to customer satisfaction.Prepares annual performance appraisals.

Evaluates and communicates individual performance appraisal issues with staff members under his / her direct supervision, and recommends compensation adjustments and advancements to senior management.Identifies training needs and determines appropriate training programs for developing the potential of subordinate and engineering staff members.Plans and monitors ABS mandatory, required and other training needs of subordinate staff members.May serve as account manager on technical projects for designated customers and actively promotes the services of ABS to clients.May serve on technical or industry committees and may represent the company as spokesperson at industry conferences or meetings.What You Will Need : Education and ExperienceB.S.

degree Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or Marine Engineer ; an M.S. is preferredProficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of statutory certification and services, and their anticipated future work.

The knowledge and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, concerning technical issues to laymen and experts.Technical background on designing and / or reviewing different types of ships.For those with Hull backgroundsB.S.

degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred.Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software.Exposed to the Finite Element Method (coursework or supervised research).

For those with Machinery backgroundsB.S.

degree in Marine, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesGraduate from University and a minimum of 15 years of related industry experience.B.S. degree Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or Marine Engineer ; an M.S. is preferredExperience in the design and review of ship structures for offshore support vessels, tugs, pushers, and barges for rivers, intracoastal, and oceangoing services; Familiarity with large merchant vessels is also considered an asset.Proficiency in conducting intact and damage stability analyses for ships and offshore structures.

This includes freeboard calculations and conditions of assignment, verification of loading manuals, operating manuals, and other related documentation.Knowledge of safety arrangements requirements for ships and offshore structures, based on applicable International Conventions and Regulations for an extensive range of ships and floating units, including Brazilian-flagged vessels, including but not limited to Stability, Load Line, Tonnage, SOLAS, MARPOL, IBWMC, MLC, NORMAMs etcReporting Relationships : The incumbent reports directly to a Senior Managing Principal Engineer or higher.

Direct reports to the incumbent are members of the engineering or technical staff and office support staff of the assigned technical unit or area.
